Posted to the Kibbutz Facebook wall, by friend of the Kibbutz Michele Yanow (and it's true, Neal is bringing his mom):

Hi, everyone.

Please come to the Seattle Jewish Chorale Inaugural Spring Concert on June 14 (this Sunday). There is nothing like voices raised in Jewish song to really get you in the kishkes. Plus, Neal is bringing his mom, so you know it is the hottest spot to be! Visit our Facebook page for all the details, and consider becoming a Fan.

thanks,
Michele (founder and president)

Anyone who read Jew-ish.com’s fairly recent piece on the Israeli cinema boom knows that Jerusalem is the new Hollywood. Okay, not really, though it’s be cool to follow the “Bollywood” model of punning and call it “Holywood.” Anyway, I’ve been programming an Israeli film series at the Ravenna Kibbutz since September; it’ll soon become a Jewish film series, so I can show a greater variety of movies.

Having been raised with secular Christmas as well as… well, secular Hanukkah and secular pretty much every other holiday, I find this time of year an odd one, especially now that I live at the Ravenna Kibbutz and am, for the first time in my life, surrounded by Jews my age from many different religious and cultural backgrounds. My dad’s first wife wasn’t Jewish, so they raised their kids with both Christian and Jewish holidays; when he married my mother, who was raised Jewish, he just couldn’t give up Christmas.

The lovers and the haters of the Jews have one thing in common: we believe passionately in conspiracy theories. Last night I went on a field trip to watch Milk with a lovely crowd from the Ravenna Kibbutz. Before going, I happened to learn two things through the Internet.
